What is Chikungunya? Baby Anti-Itch Mosquito Repellent Balm Recommendation

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes albopictus mosquito. Patients may develop sudden high fever, severe joint pain, and skin rashes. According to the  Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health, as of 5 p.m. on August 20, no new cases of Chikungunya infection have been recorded.

However, with many schools set to reopen next week, the Centre has issued letters to all primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, and childcare centres across Hong Kong, reminding them of the current risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya and Dengue fever.

What is Chikungunya Fever?

Chikungunya Fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease (primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes). Its name comes from a dialect in Tanzania, Africa, meaning “to bend over,” describing the typical posture of patients who are unable to stand upright due to severe joint pain.

Risks for Infants:

Infants infected with Chikungunya may develop high fever, rashes, and joint pain, and in severe cases, neurological complications such as meningitis. Since infants’ immune systems are not yet fully developed and they cannot clearly express discomfort, parents should pay special attention to mosquito prevention measures.

How to Choose the Right Mosquito Repellent Spray?

The best mosquito repellent spray balances effectiveness with safety. For babies, pregnant women, and sensitive skin, choose natural formulas with ingredients like lemon eucalyptus oil, citronella oil, or calendula extract. Avoid DEET, alcohol, and steroids, which may place stress on the body.

An ideal balm protects against bites while soothing skin if irritation occurs. Look for dermatologically tested and certified products, and match the type to your needs, whether for outdoor use or daily carry. Remember, chemical repellents work best when paired with physical protection such as long sleeves and mosquito nets.
